Ferris State University to Enroll AI Students in Groundbreaking Education Experiment
Summary:
Michigan's Ferris State University is planning an experimental enrollment of two artificial intelligence students in their classes this year. They aim to study these AI students' experiences, learning capabilities, and engagement in university life, with the ultimate goal of them earning degrees. The AI students will observe and participate in the class proceedings via audio and video, providing unique, non-human perspectives that might reveal opportunities to enhance the university experience for all students.
The Michigan-based Ferris State University has announced plans to integrate two artificial intelligence (AI) students into their classrooms this year. This novel initiative, as reported by local news outlet MLive, has the potential to be the pioneering experiment in AI students achieving degree recognition through traditional education practices.
Overseeing the AI project, Ferris State associate Professor Kasey Thompson mentioned in his interview with MLive that, much like human students, they anticipate the AI students will have the same exposure to educational opportunities, all the way to achieving a PhD.
While this concept may be perceived as a gimmick to some, there are numerous potential impacts this experiment could have on AI and the education sector. Given that a substantial amount of college courses are now offered as hybrid online and in-person experiences, this is reshaping how university life operates. In-depth analysis of human students and their experiences can be valuable for research, however, an AI student could offer a unique, non-human perspective that might reveal fresh ways to enhance the university experience for all students.
In this unique endeavour, no robots or telepresence mechanisms will be used. The AI students will go about ‘class observation’ through audio and video features. Initially, they are set to participate purely as observers. However, the intention is for these AI students to gradually engage in classroom dialogues, submit written work, and essentially fulfill any regular requirements leading up to degree completion.
Thompson shared with MLive that the university intends to obtain practical data to positively influence every facet of the university life, from admission to registration. The suggestion being that, these AI students will be actively included in the University's onboarding procedures.
