Ethereum Name Service Probes Development on Layer-2 Networks, Partners with GoDaddy
Summary:
ENS executive director, Khori Whittaker, has revealed that the Ethereum Name Service is researching the development of its protocol on Ethereum layer-2 networks. The team is considering whether to build its integration on an existent Ethereum layer-2 network or develop its own. They expect to see tangible outcomes from their research this year and are discussing the use of Optimism for development. In a recent partnership with GoDaddy, ENS has allowed crypto users to link their .eth domains to traditional web2 domains.
The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is ambitiously concentrating on research to establish its protocol on Ethereum layer-2 networks, stated ENS executive director, Khori Whittaker. In a recent discussion with Cointelegraph, Whittaker did not disclose specific details about the ongoing research and development, but indicated that the ENS team is considering whether to integrate its system with an existing Ethereum layer-2 network or to launch its own in-house layer 2 called "the identity layer."
Whittaker mentioned that they are significantly invested in developing layer 2 applications and anticipate noticeable results this year. One focus of recent discussions among ENS developers, Whittaker said, has been the furtherance of development using Optimism. Future development might also include the application of zero-knowledge proofs to safeguard users' personal data on public blockchains.
Presently, the challenges ENS faces stem from its protocol structure and current understanding within the Ethereum community. ENS offers crypto users the option to buy a ".eth" domain name as a substitute for the typical long string of characters that make up a user's wallet address, thereby simplifying fund transfer within the Ethereum network.
Just a few days after ENS collaborated with domain name provider GoDaddy to allow crypto users to connect their .eth domains to traditional web2 domains at no extra charge, Whittaker addressed Cointelegraph. He also expressed that ENS strongly relies on builders and developers to advance and enhance its reach. According to Whittaker, they are determined to improve awareness and to integrate it into more major institutions, similar to their collaboration with GoDaddy.
"Crypto still seems strange to most of the world, as they often only hear about scandals or fluctuating token prices," stated Whittaker. He believes their partnership with GoDaddy could facilitate wider acceptance of blockchain technology by making it more understandable to everyday internet users. "I envision a future where we no longer differentiate between Web2 and Web3. It’ll simply be known as the internet or on-chain technology, functioning quietly behind the scenes," Whittaker concluded.
