Ethereum Co-Founder Buterin Urges Developers to Finalize Decentralization Plans by Year's End

Algoine News
Summary:
Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum co-founder, advocates for developers to finalize their decentralization strategies by year's end. He also proposes stricter standards for what constitutes a rollup in the Ethereum network. Noting Ethereum's transition from a rapid primary layer development period, he calls for focus on expanding blob capacity and bolstering rollup efficiency. He also says only five layer-2 projects have achieved significant decentralization progress and mentions future roadmap steps, including strategies for data compression and enhancing layer-2 solutions.
Co-creator of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, has stated that Ethereum developers should have their decentralization strategies ready by year's end. This viewpoint was shared in his most recent blog post from March 28, summarizing his outlook after the latest upgrade to Dencun that dramatically decreases rollup transaction costs on the second layer. Buterin mentioned that Ethereum is in the midst of a pivotal transition from a period dominated by rapid primary layer development to a time where primary layer evolution continues to remain impactful. Buterin also expressed that Ethereum's scaling efforts are evolving from an initial phase to a stage of gradual enhancement. The key focus going forward is to expand blob capacity and optimize rollup performance. He believes the ecosystem’s norms would need to get more stringent. He advocated that a project should only be identified as a rollup if it has successfully reached stage 1 by year-end. Stage 1 is Buterin's label for the level of progress achieved in the decentralization of layer-2, where a network has made significant advances in security and scalability but is not yet completely decentralized - stage 2. Buterin pointed out that only five layer-2 projects mentioned on L2beat have achieved either stage 1 or 2, and only Arbitrum is thoroughly compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). The roadmap's future steps entail implementing data availability sampling to grow blob capacity up to 16MB per slot, advancing layer-2 solutions via methods such as data compression and optimistic performance, as well as enhanced security. He suggested that subsequently, they can steadily progress toward stage 2, a phase where rollups are attributed to the code, and a regulatory body can only interfere when the code has a provable disagreement within itself. The modifications like Verkle trees, single-slot finality, and account abstraction are still significant according to Buterin, but not as transformative as proof of stake and sharding. In 2022, Buterin likened Ethereum to a plane switching out its engines in mid-flight, and in 2023, to replacing its wings. Currently, Ethereum is in "The Surge" phase of its enhancement roadmap, featuring upgrades associated with rollup scalability and data sharding. The forthcoming phase, "The Scourge," will bring upgrades linked to censorship resistance, decentralization, and potential protocol risks from MEV. Buterin advised developers to create applications with a mindset appropriate for "2020s Ethereum," emphasizing second layer scaling, privacy, account abstraction, and innovative forms of community membership proofs. In conclusion, he said: “Ethereum has graduated from being merely a financial ecosystem to becoming a comprehensive autonomous decentralized technology stack.”
