Ethereum's Layer-2: More than Scalability, a Breeding Ground for Subcultures, says Vitalik Buterin
Summary:
Ethereum's second layer is not just a scaling solution, but also a hub for burgeoning subcultures that enrich the Ethereum network, according to co-founder Vitalik Buterin. In a blog post, he describes the varied groups active within Ethereum, including "cypherpunks", "regens", and "degens", each influencing different aspects of network development and application choice. Buterin believes that a balanced "cultural pluralism" focusing on diverse growth areas can beneficially impact Ethereum's ecosystem. He anticipates challenges from potential subcultural clashes but remains confident in the network's ability to address these effectively.
Ethereum's second protocol layer serves as more than just a technological innovation for better scalability. It's also a hotspot for distinct "subcultures" that enrich the Ethereum network beyond what a solitary chain could, according to Ethereum co-founder, Vitalik Buterin. In a May 29th entry on his personal blog, Buterin delved into how layer-2 blockchains foster different crypto subcultures. Among these are the traditional "cypherpunks", creators of the infrastructure and tools but noninterfering in their end use, and the altruistic "regens", dedicated to servicing community public goods.
Also present are the "degens", guided by speculation and eager to profit from popular memecoins or non-fungible tokens. These potentials for diverse groups were initially broached by Professor Paul Dylan-Ennis, an Ethereum researcher. Buterin points out how these groups have guided different strategies towards scalability, application selection, and virtual machine designing. He asserts that layer 2s have become a crucial space for engagement among different cultural elements.
However, he also cautioned blockchain developers about the potential pitfalls of luring specific audiences which may inadvertently alienate others. A blockchain labelled as 'the casino chain' might deter non-gambling applications from coming onboard, for instance.
Despite the potential hurdles of attracting unselfish core developers and researchers, Buterin remains hopeful. He believes "cultural pluralism" - the coexistence of different subcultures focused on various areas of growth, can create equilibrium on Ethereum's second layer, positively impacting the Ethereum ecosystem.
Buterin brings to light that increased female leadership roles at Optimism, and ZKSync's pledge to stay "both cypherpunk and user-friendly" are early examples of cultural diversity surfacing on Ethereum's layer-2s.
However, Buterin expects challenges down the road as different subcultures might clash due to "incentive misalignments". Yet, he surmises these issues could be navigated in time.
"Ethereum is an evolving experiment, and what makes it thrilling is our readiness to confront complex issues head-on," Buterin stated. He referenced the decision of Web3 Gamer, developers of Torque Drift 2, who quit following the introduction of crypto, along with the recurring issues faced by MetaFighter.
