Ethereum's Dencun Upgrade Clears Final Testing: Anticipates Mainnet Launch

Algoine News
Summary:
Ethereum's Dencun upgrade, featuring "proto-danksharding," has cleared its final testing stage on the Holesky testnet, paving the way for a mainnet launch. The update, a fusion of Cancun and Deneb upgrades, is expected to lower transaction costs on Ethereum layer-2s, while also enhancing network scalability and consensus layers. The mainnet launch date for Dencun will likely be decided on February 8, with early to mid-March being the indicative timeframe.
The final testing phase of the Dencun upgrade in Ethereum, introducing "proto-danksharding," has successfully concluded on the Holesky testnet and is now in anticipation of a mainnet launch date. The Dencun augmentation materialized a "fork" on Holesky around 11:35 am UTC on February 7, as reported promptly by Nethermind on platform X. This enhancement is notably forecasted to decrease transaction expenses on Ethereum layer-2s. The new addition, Dencun, ushers in proto-danksharding through Ethereum Improvement Proposal-4844. EIP-4844's crucial component are “blobs,” enabling the temporary holding and retrieval of a large volume of off-chain data by Ethereum nodes. Gnosis's Infrastructure Head, Philippe Schommers, previously clarified to Cointelegraph that Dencun’s implementation on the Ethereum mainnet may reduce rollup charges by a factor of 10. The mainnet launch date for Dencun is anticipated to be settled on February 8 during an AllCoreDevs call. Meanwhile, Ethereum enthusiast Anthony Sassano hinted on February 7 that the timeframe looks to be around early to mid-March. Dencun, a merger of the Cancun and Deneb upgrades, is projected to be Ethereum's most impactful upgrade since the Shapella upgrade in April last year, which facilitated the first Ether (ETH) unstaking from the Beacon Chain since its launch on December 1, 2020. Cancun targets network scale enhancement at the execution layer, with EIP-4844 being the core focus. EIP-1153, EIP-4788, and EIP-6780 are also integrated within the upgrade. On the other hand, Deneb aims to enhance Ethereum's consensus layer. Before reaching Holesky, Dencun was established on the Goerli and Sepolia testnets on January 17 and 30, respectively. However, during its deployment to Goerli, the Dencun faced a four-hour delay due to a bug that hindered the testnet from finalizing the upgrade. “A bug in Prysm, Ethereum's proof-of-stake client, disturbed the network's synchronization with nodes,” Nebojsa Urosevic, a founder of Ethereum development platform Tenderly, explained to Cointelegraph. Urosevic further emphasized the importance of having multiple clients and the existence of testnets due to issues like these.
