Elon Musk to Open Source Grok AI Amidst Legal Battle with OpenAI
Summary:
Elon Musk plans to publicly share his AI model, Grok, amidst a legal battle with rival company, OpenAI. Musk alleges OpenAI, with whom he had a non-profit agreement, has breached their contract via a partnership with Microsoft. Musk's decision aligns with his lawsuit urges that promote open-source advanced artificial intelligence for societal benefits. Grok, developed by Musk's firm, xAI, can fetch real-time social media data and answer complicated questions sidestepped by other AI systems.
Elon Musk has declared intentions to make his company's artificial intelligence (AI) model, Grok, freely accessible to the public, amidst a legal dispute with peer company OpenAI. Musk took to platform X on March 11 to reveal that the AI model which was hitherto proprietary, will be made open source soon. Following his statement on X, Musk received positive feedback from the user community, with one individual suggesting that OpenAI should follow suit, if they are "open". Musk responded by saying OpenAI is a "lie".
On February 29, Musk initiated legal proceedings against OpenAI accusing them of violating the contractual agreement when OpenAI was still a non-profit entity. Musk contended that OpenAI's collaboration with Microsoft contradicts the ethos of their non-profit agreement, centered on promoting open-source Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) for societal goodness. As on the closing of the 2023 calendar year, OpenAI had received investments upward of $3 billion from Microsoft. Through his lawsuit, Musk encouraged OpenAI to adhere to their initial open-source ideology and sought legal measures to inhibit the commercial misuse of AGI technology. However, a joint response from OpenAI's executives revealed correspondence from Musk proposing conversion of the company from a non-profit to a profit-making organization.
Following the instigation of the lawsuit, OpenAI reinstated its CEO, Sam Altman, who had been ousted from the Board in November 2023, acknowledging the disruptive impact of his exit on the company. Musk's decision to open source Grok aligns with his appeal in the lawsuit against OpenAI, promoting open-source AGI for societal benefit.
Grok, similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT bot, is an AI chatbot developed by Musk's firm, xAI. Unlike its competitor, Grok is capable of pulling real-time data from social media, answering queries typically avoided by other similar AI systems. To interact with Grok, users need to possess a verified account on platform X. Reports suggest that Grok AI, backed by its Grok-1 large language model (LLM), outperforms the ChatGPT-3.5 model, although it trails behind the ChatGPT-4 model.
