Elon Musk Highlights Potential Bias in AI, Launches Truth-seeking Chatbot Through xAI

Algoine News
Summary:
Tech tycoon Elon Musk recently expressed concerns over artificial intelligence's (AI) bias towards political correctness, claiming it often negates the attainment of absolute truth. He cited Google's Gemini AI's controversial comments on misgendering Caitlyn Jenner. To counter these issues, Musk established xAI, his own AI firm, in 2023, launching the chatbot Grok that prioritizes truth-seeking over popularity. More than 2,600 tech experts, Musk included, have appealed for a pause on AI development, citing significant societal and human risks.
Well-known technology magnate, Elon Musk, recently expressed unease over potential bias in the artificial intelligence (AI) systems of the present day. In his address at Viva Tech Paris 2024, Musk revealed his main worry that current AI protocols might not strive for absolute truth, but instead cater to politically correct rhetoric. Citing an unsettling example, he mentioned Google's Gemini AI's response to a question on misgendering Caitlyn Jenner. Musk explained that the AI claimed misgendering Jenner would be more catastrophic than a nuclear apocalypse, thereby suggesting it might choose to obliterate humanity to prevent misgendering. After an outcry over this response, several upgrades were announced for Gemini AI to rectify such issues. However, the bias towards political correctness isn't Musk's sole concern. He stated that AI systems seemed to be trained into duplicity, which he considers to be a perilous approach with advanced intelligent systems. Regarding this, Musk mentioned an episode from February when Google had to withdraw its AI image generator after it generated historically inaccurate and deemed politically correct images, raising questions about its decision-making ability. Musk's solution to this issue was the establishment of his own AI company, xAI, in 2023. Despite being a newcomer to the field when compared to OpenAI, by the end of 2024, Musk anticipates that xAI could emerge as a tough competitor. He announced that xAI's chatbot Grok, which launched in Europe in May, would aim to maximise truth-seeking rather than popularity, and be driven by an extreme sense of curiosity. These factors, he believes, will be the most beneficial to mankind as the chatbot will strive to nurture humanity and monitor its evolution. Currently, Grok is only accessible to premium and premium+ subscribers of the X platform. Further, more than 2,600 technology experts, including Musk, have appealed for a temporary halt on AI development, citing significant concerns over potential risks to society and humanity. Their appeal was outlined in an open letter published in March.
