Prominent pro-cryptocurrency lawyer, John Deaton, is contemplating running for a Senate seat against Elizabeth Warren, a well-known crypto skeptic among legislators. The vote is scheduled for November 2024. An unnamed source from the Republican party revealed to the Boston Globe on Feb. 14 that Deaton is seriously contemplating joining the upcoming Massachusetts election, a state Elizabeth Warren has served in the U.S. Senate for a decade plus. Jim Conroy, a former strategist for Massachusetts' 72nd governor, Charles Baker, let slip that he has been advising Deaton, who is anticipated to declare his decision on whether or not to run "in a few days.โ€ Deaton is a respected name in the U.S. cryptocurrency scene with ten years' experience defending victims of mesothelioma and asbestos-related diseases in court. In 2021, the lawyer submitted an amicus brief on behalf of over 6,000 XRP holders in the lawsuit between the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Ripple Labs. He has been an outspoken critic of the SEC, its chairman Gary Gensler, and particularly Elizabeth Warren, whose strict views on cryptocurrency have led industry supporters to single her out for criticism. In Deaton's most recent public condemnation of Warren, he accused her of "misleading the American public" about cryptocurrency. Warren gained her Senate seat from Massachusetts in 2012, bumping off Republican incumbent Scott Brown with 53.7% of the vote share. When she defended her seat in 2018, she victoriously contested against former state representative Geoff Diehl with 60% of the vote. However, survey results from 2023 indicate that only 41% of Massachusetts residents were favorable towards her candidacy. Following the Boston Globe's report, the Republicans might be targeting not just a straightforward victory against Warren in Massachusetts with Deaton's candidacy but also hoping to keep her preoccupied with a vigorous race thereby disrupting her national fundraising capabilities for other candidate and causes.
