Consensys Pivots Towards Metamask Snaps and SDK, Bidding Farewell to Ganache and Truffle Toolsets

Algoine News
Summary:
Ethereum developers pay tribute to Ganache and Truffle toolsets, as Consensys announces the discontinuation of these services in favor of Metamask Snaps and SDK. Truffle Suite was launched in 2015 and was reportedly used by 1.3 million developers worldwide. To assist with the transition, Consensys plans to partner with HardHat to continue facilitating new software development and deployment on the Ethereum network. Within the next 90 days, Truffle Suite's operations will be phased and the Truffle and Ganache codebases will be kept as public archives.
Developers of Ethereum are convening to pay tribute to Ganache and Truffle, two critical toolsets utilized during Ethereum smart contracts' nascent stages. As detailed in a Sept 22 announcement by Consensys, the termination of both these services is taking place in the midst of a wider movement towards Metamask Snaps and SDK. Georgios Konstantopoulos, CTO and partner at Paradigm, referred to the news as the “closing of a chapter,” disclosing that his initial smart contract was created on Truffle Suite. Similarly, Foobar, a crypto analyst known for retaining anonymity, claimed that Truffle was his first Ethereum smart contracts platform. One Ethereum developer expressed their gratitude around the news, stating that Truffle had influenced his career trajectory more than he was aware. The Truffle Suite was deployed in 2015, and its technological assets and team were incorporated by Consensys in 2020. Consensys reported at the point of purchase that the Truffle suite had a user base of 1.3 million developers across the globe.  To aid developers during this period of transition, Consensys aims to join forces with HardHat, enabling the development and deployment of novel software on the Ethereum network. Consensys further revealed plans to invest in new developer tools and APIs to facilitate developers in the creation of robust DApps with MetaMask, Infura, and Linea. As per a Sept 22 X post (formerly known as Twitter), the Truffle Suite's operations will be systematically phased out over the following 90 days. Post this phase, the codebases of Truffle and Ganache will be maintained as public repositories, according to Consensys. Within the Ethereum developer community, Ganache had earned popularity as a tool for designing, assessing, and deploying smart contracts, due in part to its compatibility with Truffle Suite. Metamask “Snaps”, as coined by Consensys, refers to newly developed DApps by independent developers, which expands the functionality of the Metamask wallet. Simon Morris, head of strategy at Consensys, recently revealed to Cointelegraph that the upcoming MetaMask Snaps are expected to function comparably to Apple’s App Store.
