Chivo Bitcoin Wallet Suffers Another Data Breach, Salvadoran Government Remains Silent

Algoine News
Summary:
El Salvador's state-operated Bitcoin wallet, Chivo, has experienced another data breach perpetrated by the hacker group CiberInteligenciaSV, who disclosed part of the wallet's source code on BreachForums. The event is the latest in a series of hack-related incidents linked to Chivo, including the public release of 5.1 million Salvadorans' personal data earlier in April. CiberInteligenciaSV also released a file containing code and VPN credentials for Chivo's ATM network. Despite these ongoing security issues, there has been no official response or acknowledgment from El Salvador's government.
El Salvador's government-operated Bitcoin wallet, Chivo, is once again making headlines as a group of hackers reveal more confidential data related to the wallet. The hacker collective recognised as CiberInteligenciaSV disclosed a portion of the source code on BreachForums, a notorious hacker online community, on April 23. "At present, we offer you the in-device coding of Bitcoin Chivo Wallet ATMs in El Salvador. Remember this is a state wallet and as you are aware, we don't trade, rather we publish all details here complimentary for your perusal," declared the hackers. This development is the latest in a series of Chivo related hacking incidents, including the previous release of personal details of approximately 5.1 million Salvadoran adults. This breach was publicised at the start of last month. The local digital security initiative, VenariX, signalled the public on April 22 in relation to the impending data leak. It highlighted CiberInteligenciaSV’s Telegram handle, which had posted about their intention to unveil the source code. In a post on their Telegram channel, CiberInteligenciaSV stated, "We will share part of the source code and VPN access related to Chivo Wallet tonight, free of charge as usual, unless one of the busybody government officials wishes to interact." CiberInteligenciaSV also disclosed the file Codigo.rar, which contains a consolidated set of code and VPN access details for the Chivo Wallet ATM system. It's worthwhile to remember that El Salvador broke new ground in September 2021, by becoming the first nation globally to recognize Bitcoin as legal tender. Chivo was also launched by the government as the official Bitcoin wallet for use by Salvadorans. The platform enables transactions involving purchasing and selling Bitcoin, as well as depositing and withdrawing BTC through ATMs. However, since its inception, Chivo has encountered numerous operational glitches, as reported by users. Despite recent reports in early April highlighting a personal data breach on Chivo, El Salvadoran authorities have yet to respond to the situation. Unfortunately, this silence has only served to compound the confusion surrounding the issue. Industry insiders have noted a lack of any official statement addressing the hack from Salvadoran officials.
