Canadian Intelligence Agency Warns About Threats from AI Deepfakes

Algoine News
Summary:
The Canadian Security Intelligence Service has issued a warning about the potential threat posed by artificial intelligence deepfakes, citing incidents where deepfakes have been used to manipulate and harm individuals, particularly in the cryptocurrency sector. The intelligence agency has called for government policies to adapt to the growing sophistication of this technology and highlighted the need for global cooperation amongst governments, allies, and industry experts to face the challenges presented by AI technologies and synthetic media.
Canada's primary national intelligence agency, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, has expressed its concerns about deepfake disinformation campaigns powered by artificial intelligence (AI). The agency warns that the evolving sophistication of deepfakes, together with the increasing struggle to identify and distinguish them, could potentially jeopardize Canadian citizens. Instances of deepfakes causing harm to individuals have been highlighted in the agency's report. It warns that misuse of deepfakes and other AI technologies might undermine democracy, as certain groups can create and spread incorrect 'facts' using synthetic or falsified data. The problem escalates if government authorities are unable to authenticate their official content as real and accurate. The report mentioned how deepfakes of Elon Musk had been used to mislead cryptocurrency investors. Since 2022, fraudsters have been using advanced deepfake videos to trick crypto investors into mistakenly giving away their assets. The alarm was raised by Musk himself after a falsified video, falsely presenting him promoting a dubious cryptocurrency platform, went live on X (now known as Twitter). The Canadian Security Intelligence Service also points to violations of privacy, social manipulation and bias as worrisome effects of AI. The agency calls for government frameworks, guidelines, and measures to adapt to the growing realism of deepfakes and synthetic media. It warns that government actions would become quickly irrelevant if they are conducted isolated and at a slow pace. In order to maintain the trustworthiness of global information distribution, the agency urges cooperation among partner governments, allies, and industry experts. It was noted in a parliamentary report that Canada aims to involve allied nations in addressing AI threats. This was confirmed on October 30, when a code of conduct for AI developers was agreed upon by the Group of Seven (G7) countries. As reported by Cointelegraph, the 11-point code aims to endorse "safe, secure, and trustworthy AI across the globe", while capturing the benefits of AI and mitigating its risks. The countries forming the G7 include Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union.
