Bosch, a leading engineering and technology company, is spearheading a new blockchain-based digital mobility project in collaboration with MOBIX and the Peaq blockchain. The project was showcased live at IAA Mobility 2023 in Munich, Germany. The demonstration highlighted the use of moveIDs, which act as self-sovereign identities built on the blockchain, enabling autonomous transactions between vehicles and infrastructure. This included a Jaguar electric vehicle (EV) showcasing decentralized technology with integrated payment capabilities, communicating with a charging station and a traffic signal for parking.
Cointelegraph had the opportunity to speak with Peter Busch, the project lead for moveID at Bosch, and Leonard Dorlöchter, co-founder of Peaq, to gain insights into how blockchain is shaping the future of mobility. Dorlöchter emphasized that the mobility sector, with its various transportation options and services, is a perfect fit for implementing self-sovereign identity on a large scale. By utilizing an open blockchain ecosystem, users can enjoy a seamless experience and access the best services, parking spots, and charging facilities without the need for multiple sign-ups or accounts.
According to Busch, decentralized identities on open blockchain networks are viewed as the most promising technology. This approach allows devices to be authenticated and identified without intermediaries or additional background processes, giving users complete control over their data. The project also aims to promote technological integration and standardization among automotive players in Germany and Europe, while ensuring data privacy compliance and adherence to European GDPR regulations.
The larger initiative that this project is part of is called Gaia-X, funded by the European Union. Its goal is to establish a secure and federated data infrastructure, enabling European digital sovereignty and setting the foundation for future smart cities. Busch stressed the importance of designing user-friendly systems to ensure widespread adoption, envisioning a future where decentralized digital identities become as commonplace and convenient as physical IDs.
The Peaq co-founder added that in a smart city of the future, interconnected things will require identities within an open system. This shift from the Internet of Things to the Economy of Things is expected to drive economic activity and support society through the automation of necessary tasks. To achieve this vision, systems must be open, decentralized, and offer interoperability so that everyone can participate and benefit.
