Algoine News
Summary:
The Brazilian government has announced that over 214 million citizens will soon be using blockchain technology for digital identity. The project, led by Serpro, Brazil's national data processing service, will start in Rio de Janeiro, Goiás, and Paraná, with plans for nationwide implementation by November 6. The blockchain technology will ensure secure data exchange and is expected to significantly enhance the security and reliability of the National Identity Card project. Furthermore, Brazil is set to introduce a central bank digital currency, Drex, to widen corporate access to capital.
The Brazilian government has declared that blockchain technology will be incorporated for digital identification purposes for more than 214 million citizens. This advancement will be first implemented in Rio de Janeiro, Goiás, and Paraná. These states will soon start issuing identification documents via a secure blockchain, built by Serpro, Brazil's leading data processing system. The target is to enable the whole nation to use blockchain for ID document issuance by November 6, reads a decree published on September 25. Alexandre Amorim, Serpro's president, stated that blockchain's immutable and decentralized features made it the perfect fit for the nation’s digital ID venture:"The essential role of blockchain technology in securing private data and preventing fraud will ensure Brazilians enjoy a safer digital experience. Our application of the b-Cadastros blockchain platform greatly improves the safety and dependability of the National Identity Card project." According to the regional government, this national ID project is crucial for tackling organized crime, enabling diverse government sectors to collaborate, simplifying access to services, and modernizing administrative records. A similar project has been introduced by Buenos Aires, Argentina, where residents can access ID documents through a digital wallet. Over recent years, Brazil has strived to harmonize the issuance of identity cards throughout its nearly 30 states. This newly adopted technology will enable a safer data exchange between the Federal Revenue and various government departments, as per the announcement. Emissão da Carteira de Identidade Nacional (CIN), the National Identity Card, has now gained enhanced security through blockchain. This provides Brazilian citizens with a more secure identification document than ever before. Simultaneously, another remarkable development in Brazil is the introduction of a central bank digital currency (CBDC), renamed as Drex. The government unveiled more details about this initiative in August. Earlier reports suggest that the central bank aims to widen corporate access to capital through a tokenization system connected to Drex. A code in Drex has been found that permits a central authority to either freeze funds or decrease balances, as disclosed by a local developer.
