Binance's Financial Crimes Compliance (FCC) unit is working collaboratively with Taiwan’s Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau and Taipei District Prosecutors Office to tackle a significant money laundering case, solving a fraudulent case of 200 million New Taiwan dollars ($6.2 million) in digital assets. The official announcement disclosed that the operation supported criminals in laundering unlawful income via cryptocurrency transactions. Fake transfer documents, counterfeit identification details, and altered customer interaction records were used by fraudsters to avoid law enforcement detection. Binance worked in tandem with Taipei District Prosecutors Office prosecutor Lo Wei-yuan, unveiling the enigma and comprehending the full scope of suspicions on nine accused individuals. The offenses, which are in line with applicable regulations and laws, include money laundering, fraud, and organized crime. According to the release, "On getting the request, Binance arranged an international online meeting with the investigators and prosecutors to deliberate the joint strategy.” Binance has gone above and beyond standard compliance requirements, consistently collaborating with global law enforcement agencies. This extends to a unique training program for law enforcement, a global initiative to aid in the detection and prosecution of financial and cybercrimes. Binance has a prominent presence in Taiwan, having registered with the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) and Money Laundering Control Act last year. Local regulatory bodies have previously acknowledged Binance's involvement in investigating digital asset fraud. Moreover, the company affirmed its dedication to assisting law enforcement by organizing a digital asset law enforcement training workshop for officials from Keelung District Prosecutors Office in Taiwan in March. Meanwhile, Taiwanese regulators plan to implement cryptocurrency regulations by 2024. Chairman of the FSC, Huang Tianzhu, expressed concern about illegal activities enabled by cryptocurrencies and intends to enhance the regulation of crypto exchanges. Foreign cryptocurrency platforms would risk criminal penalties unless they establish local companies and seek AML registration under the proposed law. Taiwan's Ministry of Justice is proposing amendments to existing AML laws that could sentence noncompliant firms to up to two years in jail and fine them up to $1.5 million. These proposed changes target strengthening the fight against fraud and enforcing stricter money laundering prevention measurements for crypto service providers.
