Baidu CEO Predicts AGI a Decade Away, Sees AI as Solution to Population Decline

Speaking at the Viva Tech Paris 2024 panel discussion, Li offered his insights: “We're more than 10 years out from achieving AGI... The AI models we have today are a far cry from this level of intelligence, and we're still working out how to reach it.”
This forecasting comes on the heels of a declaration by Ethereum's co-founder, Vitalik Buterin, who claimed that OpenAI’s GPT-4 generative AI model has managed to clear the Turing test, a contested standard for AI systems designed to gauge the humanlike quality of a conversational model.
Li stated that Baidu, a leader in large language model (LLM) development in China, boasts nearly 200 million combined AI users.

Li believes that the path to AGI is paved by resolving urgent societal challenges. In his opinion, AI developers should primarily concentrate on leveraging their technology to address these issues, as doing so would get us closer to AGI.
"It's by tackling these societal issues that we enhance the fundamental model that nudges us closer to AGI," he asserted.
While the appearance of the first humanlike AGI might be a decade away, such a progression could address worries sparked by the current demographic decline.
Li remarked, “If AI can reach human intelligence, it could address the population problem… AGI of this type could potentially have the productivity equivalent to billion individuals. I don't know who will get there first, but it will undoubtedly improve everyone's life.”
Tech tycoon Elon Musk is among the more notable figures voicing concerns over population decline. He expressed such sentiments in an August 2022 post, stating, “The population collapse resulting from low birth rates poses a larger risk to civilization than climate change.”
According to Worldometer data, the global population's annual growth rate has dropped to 0.91% in 2024, exhibiting a significant decline from the 1.28% rate witnessed two decades ago in 2004.
