Avail Co-founder Advocates for Unifying Infrastructure in the Ethereum Ecosystem
Summary:
Avail co-founder Anurag Arjun highlights the need for unified infrastructure from a neutral third party to refine the user experience in the Ethereum ecosystem. Arjun, also a co-founder of Ethereum layer-2 Polygon, is focusing on creating the agnostic rollup infrastructure to unify the Ethereum layer-2 system. He envisions a future where different rollups interact in the same manner as internet apps using various cloud services. With Avail Nexus, Arjun hopes to provide a standard integration between rollups, thereby benefiting the entire ecosystem rather than a select few. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin echoes Arjun's sentiments, highlighting the importance of creating L2 decentralized apps that align with Ethereum's rollup-enabled functionality.
Significant progress has been made in Ethereum's quest to boost layer-2 rollups, however, according to Ankur Arjun, co-founder of Avail, a neutral third-party entity for unified infrastructure is needed to refine the user interface. He assessed the state of the rollup ecosystem while attending the ETHGlobal conference in London. Arjun, a founding member of Ethereum layer-2 Polygon, is now focused on building infrastructure to consolidate the Ethereum layer-2 network.
Whilst working with Polygon, Arjun and his team structured their technology to match Ethereum's rollup-centric path after releasing their proof-of-stake chain. The shift called for new infrastructure, which led to the formation of Avail within Polygon back in 2020. In March 2023, Arjun became the legal owner of the intellectual rights from Polygon to continue developing Avail, resulting in him establishing Avail as a separate company with Prabal Banerjee.
Arjun aspires to create a platform compatible with leading rollup protocols such as Starkware, zkSync, Arbitrum and Optimism. The adopted technology, known as data sampling closely aligns with Ethereum's sharding course of action. The timeline for its completion spans several years, and Arjun anticipates that rollups won't wait for the data sampling aid that ensures effective verification of rollups.
Currently, the user experience on Ethereum is patchy, with users having to swap between various rollups to perform any funds transfer or swaps. Arjun aims to address this issue by combining proofs generated by individual rollups into a single proof, which would allow different rollups to communicate with one another.
Arjun likens this to the Solana blockchain, which is a single chain with many apps, offering a more user-friendly experience than Ethereum, which involves many different L2 chains in its rollup-focused direction. He envisions that rollups will act like apps on the internet, using different cloud services and interacting as needed.
Avail Nexus aims to bring this concept to life by providing a common integration standard for rollups, much like Polygon's recently launched Aggregation layer. Avail's technology can take combined proofs from the likes of Polygon's AggLayer, Starknet, Optimism, Arbitrum or Scroll and generate a "coordinated rollup." Arjun sees this as an effort to benefit the entire ecosystem, rather than a select few.
Arjun mentions that Ethereum co-founder, Vitalik Buterin, also emphasised the same concern โ who will construct the infrastructure that will bring together rollups? This responsibility, according to Arjun, should either be taken on by the Ethereum Foundation or an unbiased third party not involved in the rollup business. Buterin, who was also present at ETHGlobal, stressed the need to adjust our mindset towards the creation of L2 decentralised apps compatible with Ethereum's rollup-enabled functionality.
