A complaint about the creation of an unauthorized bank account was lodged by a victim based in New South Wales via Report Cyber, the Australian federal government’s cybercrime reporting site.
The AFP’s subsequent investigations disclosed that the convicted man had opened accounts with two digital currency exchanges using fake driver’s licenses. These licenses were forged with the defendant’s photograph and authentic personal details of the victims.
During a search operation at the perpetrator's Boronia residence in November 2022, AFP officers confiscated blank and counterfeit driver’s licenses, a misplaced passport, and several identity cards belonging to other individuals. The man’s personal computer was also found to contain encrypted messaging software filled with discussions about fraudulent activity based on identity theft and manuals instructing on fake document fabrication. The man declined to provide the required access codes to his devices when the search was underway.
