Astar Network Launches First Layer-2 Chain Integration with Polygon's AggLayer
Summary:
In a pioneering move, Astar Network -- a Japan-based blockchain company -- launches Astar zkEVM, marking the first integration of a layer-2 chain into Polygon’s AggLayer. This move is aimed at facilitating cross-chain transactions between blockchains through comprehensive zero-knowledge proofs (ZK-proofs), simulating a single network experience for users. As per Sota Watanabe, Astar Network’s founder, the development forms an integral part of Japan's national tech strategy and positions Astar as a leading figure in Japan's web3 growth.
In a first-of-its-kind move, Japanese blockchain company Astar Network introduced Astar zkEVM on March 5, marking the inaugural layer-2 chain integration with Polygon’s AggLayer. Astar zkEVM, a zero-knowledge layer-2 chain, was created to facilitate cross-chain transactions between the Astar and Polygon blockchains, connected via AggLayer, a protocol enabling multichain smart contracts through comprehensive zero-knowledge proofs (ZK-proofs). This integration enables the chains to function as if they were a single network, improving the user experience. As reported in a blog by Polygon Labs, AggLayer maintains the consistent cryptographic safety and atomic composability across combined chains, without compromising the unchangeable nature of transactions while traversing chains. In a statement to Cointelegraph, the founder of Astar Network, Sota Watanabe, described this integration as a crucial part of Japan’s technological direction: He said, “Our contribution to the AggLayer and continued developmental investments strongly position Astar zkEVM as an authoritative figure for web3 innovation, entertainment and retail dApps in Japan. This places Astar at the heart of Japan's web3 growth in the corporate, retail, and governmental sectors, driving web3's expansion." As previously stated by Cointelegraph, the announcement of AggLayer just over a month ago aimed to minimise cross-chain friction for users. Polygon Labs likened the outcome to an Internet-like user experience. Figures like Sandeep Nailwal, co-founder of Polygon, hailed the launch of AggLayer as a landmark moment. He noted in a statement, "Today is a crucial initial step towards ushering in a smooth multichain ecosystem. With Astar and several other ZK-powered chains set to join, Polygon CDK and AggLayer are likely to bring internet-scale functionalities to the crypto world.
