AssangeDAO's Suspicious Ether Transfer Raises Red Flags, SlowMist Reports
Summary:
Blockchain intelligence firm SlowMist detected a suspicious transfer of 100 Ether from AssangeDAO, raising concerns over potential unethical practices. AssangeDAO, formed to support WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, has raised over $53 million in cryptocurrency, planning to bid on a unique nonfungible token to fund Assange's defense. However, the group has recently relocated most of its funds to various addresses, including ones associated with crypto exchanges and unidentified smart contracts. Despite these suspicious movements, the AssangeDAO has not released any statement.
Blockchain intelligence firm SlowMist has detected a suspicious 100 Ether (ETH) transaction from AssangeDAO to an apparent linked address on March 10, prompting concerns about a potential "soft rug pull." As the true motive of AssangeDAO remains vague, the firm urged potential investors to exercise caution and thoroughly review the organization before interaction. AssangeDAO was established in 2022 supporting the release of Julian Assange, the Australian activist recognized for his role in WikiLeaks, a portal known for exposing classified information from undisclosed sources. AssangeDAO was formed after a 2021 High Court verdict in the UK ruled Assange’s extradition, aiming to aid his liberation. The campaign has accumulated over $53 million in cryptocurrency support, with notable contributors including Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin. The raised funds are planned to bid for a unique nonfungible token (NFT) from the "Censored" series by digital artist Pak, created in Assange's support. The funds raised from the NFT sale would contribute to Assange’s defense fund and related awareness campaigns as he contends his US extradition this month. AssangeDAO's fund accumulation of $53.7 million is recorded as the largest in DAO using community financing host platform Juicebox, surpassing the well-known ConstitutionDAO, which managed to raise $49 million late last year to bid on a first-edition print of the US Constitution. Joint analysis from SlowMist and RescuETH noted that AssangeDAO has relocated much of its funds to distinct addresses since 2022, including ones linked to crypto exchanges such as Kraken and Coinbase. Additionally, over 1,000 Ether were dispersed to various unidentified smart contracts. AssangeDAO hadn’t released any public comments about these transactions when reported. SlowMist emphasized the necessity of DAO operation transparency, pointing out that the significant fund transfers have incited numerous queries concerning the final destination of the funds. AssangeDAO reported on Nov. 8 that 16 Congress members had sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, requesting the abandonment of charges against Julian Assange. Nevertheless, a UK court granted Assange permission to contest his US extradition this Tuesday.
