Aptos Network Recovers from 5-Hour Outage Disrupting Transactions
Summary:
Aptos Network, a Layer-1 blockchain, overcame a five-hour outage that disrupted transactions across its platform. The issue was acknowledged by Aptos on social media, stating they were working tirelessly to fix it. As a result, cryptocurrency exchanges Upbit and OKX suspended Aptos Network's APT transactions temporarily. Notably, Aptos was launched a year ago by former Meta employees. The incident comes amidst a recent spate of network disruptions in the blockchain industry.
The blockchain network from Layer-1, Aptos Network, successfully resumed its usual activities following an extended five-hour interruption that affected transactions across its network. The Aptoscan network tracker indicated that all on-chain transactions on the blockchain, which uses the Move language, were ceased at 11:11pm UTC on Oct. 18 at block 104621314, leading to an interruption that outlasted five hours. A post on X (previously known as Twitter) by Aptos seemed to confirm the disruption, stating that “Your enthusiasm for Aptos One was so dynamic, it tripped the switch!” The team also mentioned that “transactions on the network were disrupted” and that they were “tirelessly working” to rectify the problem.
Subsequently, this disruption alerted the cryptocurrency exchanges Upbit and OKX to inform their users about the ongoing maintenance on the Aptos network, resulting in a temporary halt of deposits and withdrawals of APT. Aptos Labs sent out a yearly anniversary message before the disruption stating, “Aptos Mainnet made its grand debut a year ago.” Aptos, a project massively supported by venture capitalists and established on Oct. 17, 2022, was developed by ex-employees of Meta who worked on the Diem blockchain of Facebook.
On another related matter, the flawless operation in Q2 was recorded by Solana despite having one disruption in the first half of 2023. It seems like the season of outages is upon us as Aptos is not the lone chain experiencing interruption. On Oct. 19, the team at Theta Network mentioned that a node upgrade recently introduced an “unforeseen scenario bug,” causing the main chain's block production to halt for numerous hours. However, they mentioned that a solution was put into effect and the network was returning back to its normal operation.
In the previous month, the layer-2 network from Coinbase, Base, had its first significant disruption since its establishment. The scope of zero-knowledge proofs extends beyond cryptocurrency, ranging from finance to voting.
