ApeFest Attendees Report Eye Damage Allegedly Due to UV Stage Lights

Algoine News
Summary:
Multiple attendees of Yuga Labs' ApeFest event in Hong Kong reported severe burning and pain in their eyes, allegedly due to UV lights used on the event's stage. Notable among the group, CryptoJune relayed their experiences and need for hospital treatment on social media. The problem mainly affected guests close to the stage, with less than 20 reports emerging from hundreds of attendees. Yuga Labs, the event's organizer, has yet to comment on these allegations. This incident resonates with a similar occurrence in 2017 at a HypeBeast-sponsored party, where incorrect UV lighting caused health issues.
Reports have emerged of guests suffering from burning eyes, impaired vision, and severe eye pain after attending Yuga Labs' ApeFest event in Hong Kong on November 4. One attendee, known as CryptoJune, tweeted on November 5 about awakening to immense eye pain after the event, which necessitated a hospital visit. In their Twitter post, they blamed the UV lights used on the stage at the event. CryptoJune claimed to be a frequent festival-goer, but had never experienced such an issue before and questioned the safety of the lighting equipment used. Another visitor, who used the alias Feld, shared similar complaints, stirring concern among other attendees. Notably, those most affected seem to be attendees who were in closest proximity to the stage. An image taken at the ApeFest event shows people standing close the stage where the lights were mounted. Of the hundreds who attended ApeFest, less than 20 attendees have reported vision-related issues on social media, indicating that the problem mostly affected those closest to the harsh stage lights. Aside from CryptoJune and Feld, ApeFest visitor Adrian Zduńczyk, also reported an almost identical experience on social media, urging any friends suffering the same symptoms to seek immediate medical attention. Yuga Labs, the event's organizer, has not yet commented on the issue. This instance isn’t the first occurrence of party-goers in Hong Kong experiencing health issues due to incorrect UV lighting at an event. In 2017, several guests at a party sponsored by the streetwear brand HypeBeast reported similar complaints. In the 2017 incident, it emerged that the lighting contractor for the event used Philips TUV 30W G30 T8 light bulbs that emit 12 watts of UV-C radiation, predominantly used for surface disinfection. The attendees' symptoms closely align with photokeratitis or "Welder's eye", caused by lengthy exposure to excessive UV radiation.
