Amazon Studios Accused of Misusing AI During Actors' Strike in 'Road House' Remake Lawsuit

Algoine News
Summary:
Amazon MGM Studios faces a lawsuit from Lance Hill, a scriptwriter of the 'Road House' film, accusing the company of misusing AI to recreate actors' voices during the SAG-AFTRA strike. Hill also alleges copyright infringement over the unauthorized remake of 'Road House'. The studio, denying these allegations, plans to defend itself in court. The remake features A-list celebrities and is set to be released on Amazon Prime Video on March 21. The news also mentions the rise of AI in businesses, referencing 'Q', Amazon's business-oriented AI.
Accusations have been levelled against Amazon MGM Studios, formerly known as Amazon Studios, suggesting that the company utilized artificial intelligence (AI) to replicate the voices of actors during the SAG-AFTRA strike in the US that took place from July 14 to November 9, 2023. Despite these allegations, the production house denies any wrongdoing and is prepared to fight the case in court. R. Lance Hill, who contributed to the original screenplay for the 1989 action flick Road House, has taken legal action against Amazon Studios, accusing them of improper use of AI and copyright breaches in relation to the forthcoming remake of the movie. In a report by EW, it's revealed that Hill argues Amazon initiated the remake of Road House without acquiring the requisite licensing or allowing the copyright to lapse. In addition, Hill claims Amazon took to using AI to fill in for actors who were not available amid their strike, in an effort to meet the November 10, 2023 deadline. The lawsuit points out the use of AI to create artificial voices for the actors starring in the Road House remake. A representative of Amazon MGM Studios countered the allegations, stating, β€œThe lawsuit brought by R. Lance Hill concerning Road House is entirely baseless, with a multitude of assertions being patently false. The production does not resort to AI to replace the voices of actors. We anticipate defending our stance against the allegations.” An unverified EW source also denied AI was used for mimicking the actors' voices, although they revealed potential early-stage AI use in production and asserted that Amazon instructed the film creators to omit any AI components from the final version. The forthcoming Road House reproduction showcases famed A-list stars, including Jake Gyllenhaal, Conor McGregor, Post Malone, Daniela Melchior, and Jessica Williams. The movie is set to debut on Amazon Prime Video on March 21. Related News: Amazon introduces 'Q', a business-oriented competitor to ChatGPT.
