As the speed of AI evolution quickens, artists are tasked with harnessing these cutting-edge tools without losing their individual style. Among them is Greek architect Tina Marinaki based in New York. Marinaki has integrated AI tools in her artistic endeavor, garnering an Instagram following of almost 20,000 individuals with her “Athens Surreal” project, which artfully recreates the historic Athenian cityscape. Marinaki shared with Cointelegraph how she incorporated AI in her work and reshaped her hometown using modern technologies. The idea for Athens Surreal sprouted from the need to understand “how different AI tools function" while experimenting with visions of a "varied, occasionally romantic, sometimes futuristic and utopian Athens.” As per Marinaki, the main challenge in text-to-image AI systems is how to communicate an artistic vision through image description to the AI systems. “Choice or sequencing of specific words can yield completely distinct images”, she says. There are also hurdles due to algorithmic biases in terms of ethnicity, gender, etc., when biased data is utilized for training. AI biases can actually become assets with the right training. Marinaki asserts that AI can “significantly aid” construction sector data optimization by suggesting “optimal parameters” based on the data input for a project's construction. Athens Surreal primarily involves translating facets of Greek culture into AI constructs. As culture is the offspring of human experiences, a pertinent question is whether machines can aptly represent cultural essence. Marinaki argues that, despite the machine generation, the results reflect human imagination. Her intimate knowledge of Athens and her architectural training assists her in precisely conveying Greek culture to the AI tools. Marinaki's Greek followers have responded with enthusiasm to her reimagined Athens. She shares that they perceive them as "fantastic images of a city we would like to dream of-surreal everyday scenes that we sometimes want to question, ridicule or inspire." Despite the world’s progression, Greece has remained rooted in its past. Marinaki view technological advancements as a medium to help “retain imprints of the past” and even “recreate them to perfection". She urges societies to forge a "healthy relationship with AI" and implement regulatory frameworks to thwart potential issues like propaganda politics, spread of misinformation, copyright infringement, algorithmic bias and stereotyping. Furthermore, she reported that the Greek government has formed a new AI advisory committee to design a nationwide strategy for managing the technology, which she believes will allow AI to become an "omnipotent, state-of-the-art technology tool.
