AI Progress Parallels Early Internet Era, Envisions Job Evolution, Not Extinction: Salesforce AI CEO
Summary:
Salesforce AI's CEO Clara Shih likens the current state of AI development to the early days of the internet, suggesting the technology is on the cusp of transformative advancement. She reassures that AI is more likely to revamp existing jobs rather than eliminate them, just like the internet did in the past. Shih's views are mirrored by the AI division of luxury conglomerate LVMH, which emphasizes that its goal is to augment human activities, not to replace them.
Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms are at a developmental stage analogous to the early period of the Internet, stated the chief executive officer of Salesforce AI, Clara Shih. Drawing similarities between the present state of AI and the year 1988 in the context of the Internet, Shih shed light on the matter at Viva Tech Paris 2024's panel discussion. In her words, what we currently observe is the first wave of AI Automating routine and recurring tasks. As this technology matures, she anticipates the birth of innovative business models.
According to Shih, our society stands on the precipice of a significant AI breakthrough, drawing parallels with the year just before the establishment of the World Wide Web. Preceding the World Wide Web, the Internet was somewhat rudimentary and its 60,000 users were primarily confined to academic institutions and government departments. However, in 1988, the Internet began to gain accessibility globally with its first connections in Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Norway, Sweden to the National Science Foundation Network (NSFNET).

Salesforce AI CEO reassures AI is mostly revamping existing roles, not eliminating them.
Blue-collar professionals express fear about a prospective dystopian reality where AI systems would automate, dominate and perhaps make human labor redundant. Shih, however, argues that AI technology is redefining current job roles much like how the Internet did, without leading to their elimination. She stated, "The internet did replace jobs, but it also necessitated new job descriptions. We're experiencing the same with AI now."
She also expects a shift similar to the early 2000s where professionals had to adapt to using the Internet and Google to facilitate their work. Google's launch was in September 1998.

Shih's views resonate with those of AI division from Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton or LVMH. The luxury group is also aiming to utilize AI algorithms in a way that supports and enhances human work instead of phasing it out as stated by Axel de Goursac, director of AI Factory at LVMH. "Our goal is to augment, not to replace human activities using artificial intelligence...", he said.
