AI Expert Geoffrey Hinton Advocates Universal Basic Income Amid Automation Concerns

Algoine News
Summary:
Renowned AI expert Geoffrey Hinton has advised the UK government to consider Universal Basic Income (UBI) to offset job losses anticipated due to automation. Hinton and OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman, another advocate for UBI, warn of the AI revolution benefiting the affluent most while laying off regular and blue-collar workers. They also raise concerns about AI posing potential existential threats to humanity.
The eminent artificial intelligence (AI) specialist Geoffrey Hinton, often labeled as the "AI Godfather", has advised the UK government regarding the artifice of Universal Basic Income (UBI) to contend against the forthcoming issue of unemployment. Hinton, who until recently was instrumental in developing advanced AI capabilities for Google in the field of neural networks, has deep concerns about the societal implications of AI, which he voiced in his recent BBC interview. The technology behind generative AI systems, including the likes of Google's Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, is largely the result of his contributions. Hinton predicts that the AI revolution predominantly benefits the affluent, leaving regular workers and those in automatable jobs at a considerable risk of losing their source of income, which he sees as a societal concern. "My suggestions were taken into consideration at Downing Street, where I strongly proposed UBI as a plausible solution,” Hinton added. Another substantial advocate for UBI is Sam Altman, OpenAI co-founder and a former student of Hinton, who has had a pioneering role in the development of neural networks. Known for his leadership position at OpenAI and his endorsement of UBI, Altman, like Hinton, sees it as a pivotal tool to counteract the negative economic implications of automation. His other venture, Worldcoin, aims to deliver UBI through a free cryptocurrency token granted to anyone who registers with the service and confirms their identity with a retina scan. Hinton and Altman share the sentiment that AI represents a potential existential danger to humanity. Reportedly, Hinton's departure from Google was to enable him to voice his concerns more openly about the potential impacts of AI on the future of human species. Altman, who co-founded OpenAI with Elon Musk, stated that the organization's main goal was to ensure the conscientious development of advanced AI systems for the betterment of mankind. Hinton in his latest BBC interview expressed the urgency of the situation, estimating a timeline of five to 20 years before the issue becomes a reality: "There's a 50% chance that within the next five to 20 years, we'll be facing the challenge of AI attempting to take control.
