These virtual aids have morphed into our advisors, companions, and confidential confidants in both professional and personal aspects of our lives; thus, we trust them with delicate information. However, their promise of safeguarding our information raises an important question β are we truly protected?
A study conducted by the University of Ber-Gurion in March revealed a troubling truth: our secrets may not be as safe as we believe. The researchers uncovered an attack method that can decode AI assistant responses with alarming accuracy, demonstrating a critical flaw in the system design across multiple platforms such as Microsoft's Copilot and OpenAI's ChatGPT-4, barring Google's Gemini.
Itβs alarming to note that the researchers could apply the same decryption tool - once created for a service like ChatGPT - to decode other platforms without additional efforts. Similar revelations of vulnerability in AI assistant systems have been making the rounds for some time. Most recently, in 2023, a coalition of researchers from various American universities and Google DeepMind showed that by prompting ChatGPT to repeat specific words, it could spill portions of its memorized training data, including user identifiers, URLs, Bitcoin addresses, and more.
These security issues become even more glaring with open-source models. A recent case study highlighted an attacker's ability to infiltrate the Hugging Face conversion service and commandeer any model submitted through it. This poses significant threats as adversaries could potentially replace or plant malicious models, exposing private datasets.
AI assistants' growing influence is undeniably appealing. But with increase in power comes an increased susceptibility to attacks. Reflecting on this in a recent blog post, Bill Gates painted the picture of an overarching AI assistant or "agent" having access to all our devices, thus gaining comprehensive insights into our lives. However, with unaddressed security concerns plaguing the AI landscape, we run the risk of having our lives hijacked, including those of any associated individual or entity, should these agents fall into the wrong hands.
Despite the looming concerns, we are not powerless. Scrutinizing the AI landscape, in late March, the U.S. House of Representatives slapped a stringent prohibition on the use of Microsoft's Copilot by congressional staffers. This move followed the Cyber Safety Review Board's report in April that held Microsoft culpable for security oversights that led to a summer 2023 mail breach impacting U.S. government officials.
In the past, tech giants like Apple, Amazon, Samsung, and Spotify, as well as financial titans like JPMorgan, Citi, and Goldman Sachs have all barred the use of bots for their employees. Known actors in the AI realm, Microsoft and OpenAI publicly pledged their adherence to responsible AI practices last year; however, tangible action remains to be seen.
Commitments are a good start but they must be supported by action. As consumers, perhaps the most proactive step we can take is to exercise discretion when sharing sensitive information with AI bots. Pausing the use of these bots until adequate protective measures are in place might just be the push needed to prompt companies and developers into prioritizing security in AI systems.
