His climb symbolizes the impact Bitcoin has had on his life as he hopes to see the cryptocurrency reach a new peak.
A crypto-savvy 23-year-old plans to hoist a flag bearing the Bitcoin logo atop Mount Everest in a move designed to spread global financial literacy. Listed in a February 28 X-post, Dadvan Yousuf has stated his intentions to ascend the world's highest peak sometime between April and May. At the summit, he plans to display the Bitcoin flag before returning it to the base camp. His mission aims to emphasize the worldwide inequity in accessing financial education.
Back in 2011, Yousuf reportedly invested around $340 in Bitcoin, which he later diversified into Ether (ETH) and Non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Born in Iraq and currently operating his business out of Dubai, his net worth was estimated to be in excess of $300 million as of January 2022.
Mount Everest's popularity has spiked in recent years due to overtourism, escalating problems on the terrain. Inexperienced climbers, drawn by tales of Everest on social media, often come unprepared for the severe conditions. In 2023, 18 climbers died in their pursuit of reaching the mountain's peak, many perishing in the so-called 'death zone' above 8000 meters. The mountain also faces a growing litter problem, with oxygen tanks, food waste, camping gear, and human waste being left behind by climbers.
Yousuf, however, has pledged to leave no trace of his ascent, planning to take all his gear back down from the 8,849-meter peak. Speaking with Cointelegraph, he stated his commitment to preserving Everest’s pristine conditions and ensuring minimal environmental impact.
Discussing his crypto-journey, he added how Bitcoin has fundamentally altered his life and that he intends to fly the Bitcoin flag on the roof of the world as the cryptocurrency nears its all-time high.
Other mountaineers, too, have sought to leverage their climbs to promote cryptocurrencies. In 2018, three crypto fans planned to leave a Ledger wallet at the Everest peak, a mission met with a tragic end on the descent. More recently, in 2023, a climber partially funded his climb to Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania using Bitcoin to raise money for financial literacy.
As of the news release, Bitcoin hit a 2024 high of $64,000 before retracting to under $61,000.
