A digital economy and emerging technology forum focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) development is being arranged between the USA and Nigeria to pursue potential collaboration prospects. Arthur Brown, Deputy Head of Mission at the U.S. Embassy, disclosed this at the culmination of a four-day National Artificial Intelligence Strategy Workshop in Abuja. Brown disclosed that within a fortnight, high-ranking officials from the U.S. administration will gather in Abuja for a summit facilitated by the U.S.-Nigeria Bi-National Commission. Elaborating on the upcoming dialogue, the deputy head revealed the United States' ambition to exploit the impetus catalyzed by the workshop by scheduling an AI conference in Lagos. The collaboration aims to bolster economic relations and guarantees the safe, secure, transparent, and trustworthy application of AI technology. Brown confirmed that the U.S., through various agencies, is prepared to team up with Nigeria as equal partners to advance talent, infrastructure, research and innovation. He lauded Nigeria for backing a crucial UN resolution on AI and pledged to continue the partnership between the U.S. government and Nigeria in economic matters. At the workshop’s end, the Minister for Communications Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, stressed the crucial role of African administrations and leaders in taking definitive action to back their aspirations and strategies. According to research by PricewaterhouseCoopers, by 2030 AI could add $15.7 trillion to the global economy, with around $3 trillion resulting from increased productivity and $9.1 trillion due to new commodities and services. Tijani accentuated revenue generation and job creation, arguing that Nigeria's focus should be on establishing an effective AI governance structure, rather than prioritizing revenue. He sees AI as a key instrument to boost productivity across industries. In collaboration with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), the ministry oversaw a four-day Artificial Intelligence workshop to create a cooperative plan for AI implementation. The workshop facilitated the launch of Nigeria’s first Multilingual Large Language Model (LLM), as part of the nation's drive toward leading AI development in Africa. In August 2023, the Nigerian Government invited scientists of Nigerian descent as well as renowned global experts with practical experience in the Nigerian market to contribute to formulating its National Artificial Intelligence Strategy.
